Breaking Night
In 1980, a young girl named Elizabeth Murray was born in Bronx, New York. She was born to two drug addicted parents. From kindergarten to eighth grade Liz often ditched school, getting by on final tests at the end of every year. Freshmen year, a few years after her mother was diagnosed with AIDS, Liz gave up and dropped out of high school, and became a teenage runaway. Liz lived on the streets and in motels with her best friend and boyfriend for 2 years. After her boyfriend became a drug addict, Liz left him and returned to high school. Liz was denied multiple times before she finally got accepted at Humanities Preparatory Academy, or Prep. Liz doubled up on classes and finished 4 years of high school in only two years, while also battling homelessness. Liz earned a scholarship from the New York Times after sharing her story, and with lots of support Liz was able to use that scholarship to attend Harvard University. Liz Murray worked hard for what she wanted and was able to make a difference in her life, against all odds. (187 words)
